description The promise of field emitter array based displays as a display technology has been discussed since the 1960's. Field emitter displays theoretically offer many advantages including high energy efficiency, high brightness, wide dimming range, CRT like-color, high video speed, high resolution, wide viewing angle, thin packages with low weight, and low manufacturing cost with low yield defect sensitivity. The technology has only recently begun to demonstrate the potential to fulfill some of those promises beyond the theory. Several companies pursuing this technology have produced demonstrators and/or initial products. This talk will review the basic fundamentals of the technology and attempt to assess the field emitter array display's potential for consumer video display applications.
