Zusammenfassung:Previously abstracted from original as item 9108-31-3305. A series of statistically planned experiments were conducted on a steel containing 11% Mn with 0.2-1.2% carbon and 0.02-0.1% phosphorus to determine the correlation of wear resistance measured in a ring--pin test apparatus with hardness, yield and ultimate strength, reduction-in-area and impact resistance. The ring was made of Mn steel, heat treated by water quenching from 1100 deg C, while the pin was made of induction hardened type 50 steel. The regression equation for wear resistance of the ring showed a relatively high correlation coefficient (R = 0.95) and indicated that changes in composition of the Mn steel that produced a simultaneous increase in hardness and yield strength or yield strength and impact resistance resulted in a significant increase in wear resistance. A regression equation for wear of the pin in relation to the mechanical properties of the ring had a much lower regression coefficient (R = 0.77).
