description This study investigated the mechanism and efficacy of topical acidified aliphatic ester for treatment of axillary osmidrosis (AO). A total of 32 AO patients were enrolled in this study. In the initial pilot study, 20 patients were double‐blindly, randomly divided into acidified aliphatic ester or aliphatic ester treatment groups, followed by efficacy evaluation after 4 weeks. Then, all patients (n = 32) were treated with topical acidified aliphatic ester for 16 weeks. Efficacy was evaluated at every 4 weeks, and at 3‐ and 6‐month follow‐ups. Changes of pH values and microecology at targeting sites were analyzed. In the first cohort (n = 20) of pilot study, acidified aliphatic ester showed significantly higher curative rate (60% vs 10%, P

Changes of pH values and microecology at targeting sites were analyzed. In the first cohort (n = 20) of pilot study, acidified aliphatic ester showed significantly higher curative rate (60% vs 10%, P &lt; .05) and effective rate (90% vs 30%; P &lt; .05) than aliphatic ester. For the next 16 weeks, 25 of 32 cases completed treatment. Curative rate showed gradual and significant increases from 64% to 96% during the treatment courses (P = .001); it slightly but insignificantly decreased at 3‐ and 6‐ month follow‐ups. Abundance of Corynebacterium and Anaerobic bacteria decreased while Staphylococcus increased after treatments. Axillary pH values negatively correlated with Staphylococcus abundance (r = −.40, P = .01) and positively with Corynebacterium abundance (r = .64, P = .01). We concluded that topical acidified aliphatic ester could effectively alleviate conditions of AO patients by reducing value of axillary pH and rebalancing axillary microecology.</description><identifier>ISSN: 1396-0296</identifier><identifier>EISSN: 1529-8019</identifier><identifier>DOI: 10.1111/dth.14844</identifier><identifier>PMID: 33528092</identifier><language>eng</language><publisher>Hoboken, USA: John Wiley &amp; Sons, Inc</publisher><subject>acidified aliphatic ester ; axillary osmidrosis ; microbiology ; skin pH ; treatment</subject><ispartof>Dermatologic therapy, 2021-03, Vol.34 (2), p.e14844-n/a</ispartof><rights>2021 Wiley Periodicals LLC.</rights><lds50>peer_reviewed</lds50><oa>free_for_read</oa><woscitedreferencessubscribed>false</woscitedreferencessubscribed><citedby>FETCH-LOGICAL-c3604-8c79205540629c1fe1918972f01ff6c0d644212653bda7326b42258ec96145103</citedby><cites>FETCH-LOGICAL-c3604-8c79205540629c1fe1918972f01ff6c0d644212653bda7326b42258ec96145103</cites><orcidid>0000-0002-3355-9586</orcidid></display><links><openurl>$$Topenurl_article</openurl><openurlfulltext>$$Topenurlfull_article</openurlfulltext><thumbnail>$$Tsyndetics_thumb_exl</thumbnail><linktopdf>$$Uhttps://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.1111%2Fdth.14844$$EPDF$$P50$$Gwiley$$H</linktopdf><linktohtml>$$Uhttps://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111%2Fdth.14844$$EHTML$$P50$$Gwiley$$H</linktohtml><link.rule.ids>314,776,780,1411,27901,27902,45550,45551</link.rule.ids><backlink>$$Uhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/33528092$$D View this record in MEDLINE/PubMed$$Hfree_for_read</backlink></links><search><creatorcontrib>Zeng, Jinrong</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Du, Hongjiao</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Zhang, Yuezhong</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Tong, Xiaoliang</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Gao, Lihua</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Xiang, Yaping</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Tan, Wenbin</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Zhou, Lu</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Ding, Shu</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Lu, Jianyun</creatorcontrib><title>Efficacy of topical acidified aliphatic ester for treatment of axillary osmidrosis by rebalancing skin microecology</title><title>Dermatologic therapy</title><addtitle>Dermatol Ther</addtitle><description>This study investigated the mechanism and efficacy of topical acidified aliphatic ester for treatment of axillary osmidrosis (AO).
