The aim of this study was to investigate the association between retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4) and diabetic retinopathy (DR) among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).
Methods
Databases PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, VIP, and Wangfang were searched to July 30, 2019. The Newcastle–Ottawa Scale was applied to assess the quality of all identified studies, and those qualified were included in the meta-analysis. The Chi squared

Standardized mean differences (SMD) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) among RBP4 within the DR and T2DM without retinopathy (DWR) groups were pooled using the random effects model depending on the heterogeneity. Subgroup analyses were conducted among the groups having different diabetes duration, detection methods, body mass index, and total cholesterol and triglyceride levels. The funnel plot was used to assess publication bias.
Results
Nineteen observational studies were included in our meta-analysis. RBP4 was significantly higher in both nonproliferative DR (SMD: 0.72, 95% CI 0.48–0.95,

Results
Nineteen observational studies were included in our meta-analysis. RBP4 was significantly higher in both nonproliferative DR (SMD: 0.72, 95% CI 0.48–0.95,
P
< 0.00001) and proliferative DR (SMD: 2.68, 95% CI 1.69–3.67,
P
< 0.00001) groups despite high heterogeneity (
I
2
= 87 and 97% in DR and PDR groups, respectively). Significant differences were noted among most subgroups (
P
< 0.05). Among those accompanied by hypercholesterolemia, the association between RBP4 and DR were unclear (
P
= 0.09).
Conclusions
Elevated RBP4 is strongly associated with DR and may play an essential role in its progression. Additional large-scale controlled studies are needed to confirm these findings.</description><identifier>ISSN: 0940-5429</identifier><identifier>EISSN: 1432-5233</identifier><identifier>DOI: 10.1007/s00592-020-01535-3</identifier><identifier>PMID: 32405713</identifier><language>eng</language><publisher>Milan: Springer Milan</publisher><subject>Body mass index ; Cholesterol ; Diabetes ; Diabetes mellitus (non-insulin dependent) ; Diabetic retinopathy ; Eye Complications of Diabetes ; Hypercholesterolemia ; Internal Medicine ; Medicine ; Medicine & Public Health ; Meta-analysis ; Metabolic Diseases ; Original Article ; Retinol-binding protein ; Retinopathy ; Statistical analysis ; Vitamin A</subject><ispartof>Acta diabetologica, 2020-10, Vol.57 (10), p.1203-1218</ispartof><rights>Springer-Verlag Italia S.r.l., part of Springer Nature 2020</rights><rights>Springer-Verlag Italia S.r.l., part of Springer Nature 2020.</rights><lds50>peer_reviewed</lds50><woscitedreferencessubscribed>false</woscitedreferencessubscribed><citedby>FETCH-LOGICAL-c375t-ed996d105941c2cac46fad5ad8e9d9334817e76dd905e71414c0f273bf102b113</citedby><cites>FETCH-LOGICAL-c375t-ed996d105941c2cac46fad5ad8e9d9334817e76dd905e71414c0f273bf102b113</cites><orcidid>0000-0003-2650-0233</orcidid></display><links><openurl>$$Topenurl_article</openurl><openurlfulltext>$$Topenurlfull_article</openurlfulltext><thumbnail>$$Tsyndetics_thumb_exl</thumbnail><linktopdf>$$Uhttps://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s00592-020-01535-3$$EPDF$$P50$$Gspringer$$H</linktopdf><linktohtml>$$Uhttps://link.springer.com/10.1007/s00592-020-01535-3$$EHTML$$P50$$Gspringer$$H</linktohtml><link.rule.ids>314,776,780,27901,27902,41464,42533,51294</link.rule.ids><backlink>$$Uhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/32405713$$D View this record in MEDLINE/PubMed$$Hfree_for_read</backlink></links><search><creatorcontrib>Han, Wentao</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Wei, Huagen</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Kong, Weizheng</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Wang, Jing</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Yang, Luqian</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Wu, Huiqun</creatorcontrib><title>Association between retinol binding protein 4 and diabetic retinopathy among type 2 diabetic patients: a meta-analysis</title><title>Acta diabetologica</title><addtitle>Acta Diabetol</addtitle><addtitle>Acta Diabetol</addtitle><description>Aims
