This study seeks to fill this gap by comparing the cost of EoE with other well‐known inflammatory diseases, including Crohn's disease (CD) and celiac disease (CeD).
Methods
A Mann‐Whitney U test and multiple logistic regression were used to examine the cost of EoE in the state of Nevada across all hospital settings and its impact on quality of life compared with CD and CeD.
Results
Several factors were associated with the overall cost of EoE in Nevada, including patients’ age, sex and region (P < 0.001). EoE was significantly more expensive to treat in the pediatric group ($4001 EoE; $985 CD; $856 CeD), among men ($2532 EoE; $1500 CD; $1724 CeD), among those residing in the southern region of Nevada ($4501 EoE; $2538 CD; $1888 CeD), and among patients seeking medical care from outpatient clinics ($3298 EoE; $741 CD; $1686 CeD) (P < 0.001). Age, sex, region and hospital setting were all associated with having a positive EoE record compared with CeD or CD (P < 0.001).
Conclusions
Data from this study indicate that the EoE burden is significantly higher in cost for certain demographics and regions compared with CD and CeD in the state of Nevada, specifically among pediatric and male patients. These differences suggest that clinicians may encounter similar issues when treating EoE.</description><identifier>ISSN: 1751-2972</identifier><identifier>EISSN: 1751-2980</identifier><identifier>DOI: 10.1111/1751-2980.12832</identifier><identifier>PMID: 31755642</identifier><language>eng</language><publisher>Melbourne: Wiley Publishing Asia Pty Ltd</publisher><subject>Autoimmune diseases ; Celiac disease ; chronic disease ; costs and cost analysis ; Crohn's disease ; Demography ; eosinophilic esophagitis ; epidemiology ; Esophageal diseases ; Esophagitis ; Esophagus ; Gastrointestinal diseases ; Inflammatory bowel diseases ; Inflammatory diseases ; Leukocytes (eosinophilic) ; logistic models ; Patients ; Pediatrics ; Quality of life</subject><ispartof>Journal of digestive diseases, 2020-01, Vol.21 (1), p.12-19</ispartof><rights>2020 Chinese Medical Association Shanghai Branch, Chinese Society of Gastroenterology, Renji Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine and John Wiley & Sons Australia, Ltd</rights><rights>2020 Chinese Medical Association Shanghai Branch, Chinese Society of Gastroenterology, Renji Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine and John Wiley & Sons Australia, Ltd.</rights><lds50>peer_reviewed</lds50><woscitedreferencessubscribed>false</woscitedreferencessubscribed><citedby>FETCH-LOGICAL-c3712-1f89e9fc8d3b74c42dc4570bd7609c78a5c46435ad2db535947d0227373cf6363</citedby><cites>FETCH-LOGICAL-c3712-1f89e9fc8d3b74c42dc4570bd7609c78a5c46435ad2db535947d0227373cf6363</cites><orcidid>0000-0001-5582-7206</orcidid></display><links><openurl>$$Topenurl_article</openurl><openurlfulltext>$$Topenurlfull_article</openurlfulltext><thumbnail>$$Tsyndetics_thumb_exl</thumbnail><linktopdf>$$Uhttps://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.1111%2F1751-2980.12832$$EPDF$$P50$$Gwiley$$H</linktopdf><linktohtml>$$Uhttps://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111%2F1751-2980.12832$$EHTML$$P50$$Gwiley$$H</linktohtml><link.rule.ids>314,780,784,1416,27915,27916,45565,45566</link.rule.ids><backlink>$$Uhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/31755642$$D View this record in MEDLINE/PubMed$$Hfree_for_read</backlink></links><search><creatorcontrib>Anderson, Julia</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Moonie, Sheniz</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Hogan, Mary Beth</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Scherr, Rebecca</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Labus, Brian</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Word, Jessica</creatorcontrib><title>Cost of chronic inflammatory disease: The impact of eosinophilic esophagitis in Nevada</title><title>Journal of digestive diseases</title><addtitle>J Dig Dis</addtitle><description>Objectives
