Ceremonies in the haunted city

A 1995 visit to Berlin, Germany, is described. The year marks the 50th anniversary of the ending of World War II, and memories of that conflict are everywhere in the city. Many of the younger Germans, however, are bored with stories of a war that ended fifty years ago.
