Results of five years of operation with deep manned submersibles MIR-1 and MIR-2 on nuclear submarine Komsomolets wreck

Beginning in 1989 annual scientific research and underwater technical operations with the "MIR-1" and "MIR-2" submersibles on the "Komsomolets" wreck began. A wide range of oceanographic research from the R/V "Akademik Mstislav Keldysh" is provided every year....

description Beginning in 1989 annual scientific research and underwater technical operations with the "MIR-1" and "MIR-2" submersibles on the "Komsomolets" wreck began. A wide range of oceanographic research from the R/V "Akademik Mstislav Keldysh" is provided every year. During five expeditions large volumes of data from measurements and analysis were accumulated. The most important results of the research are introduced and summorized in this paper. In the second part of the paper the procedures and results of the underwater technical work on the "Komsomolets" wreck with the "MIR"s are presented. These operations are undertaken to try and decrease the potential leakage of radiation from the nuclear reactor and nuclear weapons.
