Zusammenfassung:Swallowing gives rise to a characteristic pattern of acceleration in normal subjects which is different from that of dysphagic individuals. In the past, signal parameters like mean power, mean frequency, and peak magnitude were used to characterize the signal. The question remains if fractal dimension can be used to characterize the signal. The purpose of the present study was to address this question. The fractal dimension was found to be 1.585/spl plusmn/0.199 for acceleration signals due to normal swallowing, and was found to be 1.238/spl plusmn/0.059 for acceleration signals due to dysphagic swallowing.
