Protein imaging by MALDI IMS allows multiplexed histological mapping of proteins and protein components that are inaccessible by antibodies and should be considered an important tool for basic and clinical cardiovascular research. •Protein imaging of cardiac tissue is underrepresented in MALDI IMS studies.•We discuss and demonstrate current MALDI IMS approaches that may be used to detail proteins from cardiac tissue.•MALDI IMS has the potential to become an defining tool for proteomic studies in cardiovascular research.
