description Biogenic calcite particles (coccoliths) from microalgae have complex, three-dimensional structures, which are not yet known for technical particles. It is therefore rewarding to investigate coccoliths with respect to their potential industrial application. This work introduces an efficient phototropic bioprocess for the production of coccoliths and provides an insight into the application potential of these exceptional particles.
