The association between recent incarceration and inpatient resource use and death rates: evaluation of a US veteran sample

Highlights • Veterans recently released from prison have higher rates of serious psychiatric and medical conditions than other veterans. • Veterans recently released have lower rates of many chronic medical conditions after controlling for age. • Veterans recently released were almost twice as likely to require inpatient hospitalization. • Veterans recently released were almost twice as likely to have died after controlling for age and chronic diseases.
