Subjects from four government residential homes for older adults aged ≥60 years with mild to moderate cognitive function as assessed by the Mini-Mental State Examination were included in the study. Subjects were divided into an intervention group and a control group; the former participated in a combined poco-poco dance and relaxation intervention whilst the latter participated in relaxation exercises only. Both groups participated in two sessions per week for six weeks. Anxiety and depression were self-assessed using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and QOL was self-assessed using the Quality of Life in Alzheimer’s Disease questionnaire. Results: A total of 84 elderly subjects were included in the study; 44 were in the intervention group and 40 were in the control group. This study aimed to explore the effectiveness of a combined dance and relaxation intervention as compared to relaxation alone in reducing anxiety and depression levels and improving quality of life (QOL) and cognitive function among the cognitively impaired elderly. Methods: This quasi-experimental study was conducted between May and December 2013 in Peninsular Malaysia. Subjects from four government residential homes for older adults aged ≥60 years with mild to moderate cognitive function as assessed by the Mini-Mental State Examination were included in the study. Subjects were divided into an intervention group and a control group; the former participated in a combined poco-poco dance and relaxation intervention whilst the latter participated in relaxation exercises only. Both groups participated in two sessions per week for six weeks. Anxiety and depression were self-assessed using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and QOL was self-assessed using the Quality of Life in Alzheimer’s Disease questionnaire. Results: A total of 84 elderly subjects were included in the study; 44 were in the intervention group and 40 were in the control group. When compared to control subjects, those in the intervention group showed significantly decreased anxiety (P &lt;0.001) and depression (P &lt;0.001) levels as well as improved QOL (P &lt;0.001) and cognitive impairment (P &lt;0.001). Conclusion: Dance as a form of participationbased physical exercise was found to reduce anxiety and depression levels and improve QOL and cognitive function among the studied sample of cognitively impaired elderly subjects in Malaysia. الهدف : الضعف الإدراكي مشكلة شائعة بين كبار السن، و يعتقد أن يكون من مقدمات الخرف. هدفت هذه الدراسة إلى استكشاف فعالية إدراج الرقص و الاسترخاء معا مقارنة مع الاسترخاء وحده في الحد من القلق و الاكتئاب و تحسين جودة الحياة و وظيفة الإدراك بين مرضى الضعف الإدراكي في كبار السن. الطريقة : أجريت هذه الدراسة شبه التجريبية ما بين مايو و ديسمبر 2013 في شبه جزيرة ماليزيا على أشخاص أعمارهم فوق الستين عام يقطنون في أربع منازل سكنية لكبار السن التابعة للحكومة. كان المشاركون في الدراسة يعانون من ضعف في الوظيفة الإدراكية خفيفة إلى معتدلة بناء على اختبار مصغر للقدرة العقلية. تم تقسيم المشاركين إلى مجموعة اختبار و مجموعة ضابطة. مجموعة الاختبار شاركت في رقصة بوكو بوكو مع تمارين الاسترخاء في حين شاركت المجموعة الضابطة في تمارين الاسترخاء فقط. شاركت كلتا المجموعتين في جلستين في الأسبوع لمدة ستة أسابيع. جرى التقييم الذاتي للقلق و الاكتئاب باستخدام مقياس القلق و الاكتئاب الخاص بالمستشفى و تم التقييم الذاتي لنوعية الحياة بتعبئة استبيان خاص بجودة الحياة لمرضى الزهايمر. النتائج : شملت الدراسة 84 مسنا (44 في مجموعة الاختبار و 40 في المجموعة الضابطة). بالمقارنة بالمجموعة الضابطة، أظهرت مجموعة الاختبار انخفاضا ملحوظا ذا قيمة إحصائية في القلق (0.001 &gt; P) و الاكتئاب (0.001 &gt; P) فضلا عن تحسين نوعية الحياة (0.001 &gt; P) و الإدراك. (0.001 &gt; P) النتيجة : وجد أن الرقص يمكن إضافته كشكل من أشكال ممارسة الرياضة البدنية للحد من القلق و الاكتئاب و تحسين جودة الحياة و وظيفة الإدراك في العينة المدروسة للمسنين الذين لديهم ضعف إدراكي في ماليزيا.</abstract><cop>Muscat - Oman</cop><pub>Sultan Qaboos University</pub><pmid>26909213</pmid><doi>10.18295/squmj.2016.16.01.009</doi><tpages>7</tpages><oa>free_for_read</oa></addata></record>
