description | This article addresses the extent to and ways in which gender inequality in the newspaper coverage of art and culture differs between France, Germany, the Netherlands and the United States in the period 1955-2005. We draw on content analysis data of newspaper articles on art and culture that appeared in elite newspapers in four sample years (1955, 1975, 1995 and 2005). Our findings show that longitudinal changes and cross-national differences in gender inequality are strikingly absent in the newspaper coverage of art and culture in general. Yet, whereas gender inequality is declining for most Tiighbrow' genres (literature and visual arts) during the period 1955-2005, women are increasingly underrepresented in the newspaper coverage of popular music and - to a lesser extent - film. Furthermore, we find a dear division of labor where women are best represented as laymen, but largely absent as producers and artistic leaders. Adapted from the source document. |
