Effects on lung stress of position and different doses of perfluorocarbon in a model of ARDS

Highlights • Ventilator settings must take into account both gas exchange and stress and strain. • Combining PLV with optimal PEEP should improve gas exchange with minimal stress in supine position. • PFC can modify lung homogeneity and thus distort the beneficial effect of prone positioning.
