A change in the distribution pattern of diatoms above and below the halocline in bottom sediments of the central Arkona Basin, southern Baltic

The existence of a specific sedimentation pattern for diatoms within the transition layer of the halocline and in the sediments above and below it was examined using sediment cores from the central Arkona basin of the southern Baltic sea. Diatom distribution data were also obtained for comparison with diatom records of the brackish and marine phases in Baltic sediment cores. Changes in the distribution pattern of diatoms and diatom pieces were observed, reflecting the position of the halocline. The role of recent hydrological and chemical factors in determining diatom distribution patterns is discussed. There are 36 references.
