The cumulative incidence of readmission for HF remained almost 3 times higher in patients with preoperative HF compared with those without for MVP (2.1% vs 5.9% in 30 days and 10.3% vs 26.3% in 5 years) and 2 times higher for MVR (3.6% vs 7.4% in 30 days and 15.8% vs 30.4% in 5 years). Regardless of procedure type, patients without preoperative HF had significantly lower HF readmission rates (3.0% vs 7.0% in the first 30 days and 13.6% vs 29.2% after 5 years) ( p = 0.0001). Conclusions Hospital readmission after mitral surgery is high. Preoperative heart failure is associated with higher postoperative readmission rates. Because admission for heart failure accounts for a significant proportion of these readmissions, close follow-up of patients with known mitral valve disease and referral to surgery prior to development of heart failure may decrease postoperative readmission rates. |
