Reproduction among saugeyes (F sub(x) hybrids) and walleyes in Normandy Reservoir, Tennessee

description In the 1980s, after attempts to stock Normandy Reservoir, Tennessee, with walleyes Stizostedion vitreum apparently failed, saugeyes (S. vitreum x sauger S. canadense) were occasionally stocked to provide a put-grow-and-take fishery. Electrophoretic analyses of Stizostedion spp. collected in 1995 confirmed that saugeyes were reproducing in Normandy Reservoir, both with other saugeyes and with walleyes. Of 35 Stizostedion spp. of the 1994 year-class, 24 were backcrossed or F sub(2) individuals, 9 were walleyes, 1 was an F sub(1) hybrid, and 1 was an F sub(2) hybrid. Reproduction of saugeyes in Normandy Reservoir has compromised the genetic integrity of walleyes in the reservoir, placed downstream parental stocks at risk, and precluded the control of Stizostedion population densities by fisheries managers. Managers must realize the potential for saugeye reproduction and not stock saugeyes where impacts on native parental stocks are possible.
