Benthic foraminiferal assemblages from the Brendola section (Priabonian stage stratotype area, northern Italy): Distribution, palaeoenvironment and palaeoecology

As part of a complete micropaleontological reevaluation of the Brendola section, one of the three Late Eocene stratotype sections, we studied the benthic Foraminifera. This is the first precise study of the Eocene-Oligocene boundary in this section. We applied the paleobathymetric zonation for Eocen...

This is the first precise study of the Eocene-Oligocene boundary in this section. We applied the paleobathymetric zonation for Eocene benthic Foraminifera previously proposed by one of us to this section. The overall scarcity of planktonic Foraminifera (&lt;4%) and the sporadic occurrence of larger Foraminifera and Bryozoa suggest deposition in a shelf environment. The diversity, distribution and occurrence of smaller benthic Foraminifera were examined. These factors and the ecophenotypical variations of Spiroplectammina, Uvigerina and Marginulinopsis allowed the differentiation of four assemblage zones. These zones correspond to the transition from an outer neritic to an inner shelf environment. We propose that volcanic events influenced the epiphytic benthic foraminiferal assemblages. The epiphytic Foraminifera are dependent on the algae. The algae did not survive because of high water turbidity resulting from ashfall, and the O 2 diminution arising by installation of reducing conditions.</description><identifier>ISSN: 0377-8398</identifier><identifier>EISSN: 1872-6186</identifier><identifier>DOI: 10.1016/0377-8398(91)90015-X</identifier><language>eng</language><publisher>Elsevier B.V</publisher><subject>Marine</subject><ispartof>Marine micropaleontology, 1991, Vol.17 (3), p.237-254</ispartof><rights>1991 Elsevier Science Publishers B.V.</rights><lds50>peer_reviewed</lds50><woscitedreferencessubscribed>false</woscitedreferencessubscribed><citedby>FETCH-LOGICAL-a273t-73d25b20008aff896b5d4cc098d89fe4c5f0c82d83cd010700165c3329bcacd83</citedby><cites>FETCH-LOGICAL-a273t-73d25b20008aff896b5d4cc098d89fe4c5f0c82d83cd010700165c3329bcacd83</cites></display><links><openurl>$$Topenurl_article</openurl><openurlfulltext>$$Topenurlfull_article</openurlfulltext><thumbnail>$$Tsyndetics_thumb_exl</thumbnail><linktohtml>$$Uhttps://dx.doi.org/10.1016/0377-8398(91)90015-X$$EHTML$$P50$$Gelsevier$$H</linktohtml><link.rule.ids>314,778,782,3539,4012,27912,27913,27914,45984</link.rule.ids></links><search><creatorcontrib>Barbin, Vincent</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Keller-Gru¨nig, Angela</creatorcontrib><title>Benthic foraminiferal assemblages from the Brendola section (Priabonian stage stratotype area, northern Italy): Distribution, palaeoenvironment and palaeoecology</title><title>Marine micropaleontology</title><description>As part of a complete micropaleontological reevaluation of the Brendola section, one of the three Late Eocene stratotype sections, we studied the benthic Foraminifera.
