description ABSTRACT A novel ultrawideband (UWB) planar monopole antenna with step slots defective ground structure is presented in this article. The proposed microstrip‐based antenna is comprises of an elliptical shape radiating patch with 50‐Ω feed line. Eleven step slots have been used to implement defected ground plane which resulted to tremendous bandwidth increment. The proposed antenna is fabricated on an inexpensive FR4 substrate with overall dimension of 32.4 × 25.2 mm2. From the measured result, the proposed antenna covers 3.125–10.625 GHz, which is the UWB frequency range. Hence, the proposed antenna is suitable for UWB applications such as autonomous robot communication for disaster recovery, infostation systems communication, e‐ward round, and medical imaging communications. Moreover, the antenna is compact in size, low cost, easy to fabricate with nearly omnidirectional radiation pattern. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 56:2084–2088, 2014
