Zusammenfassung:The pelagic tunicates including salps, doliolids, and appendicularians exhibit higher feeding rates, greater retention of bacteria-sized food, and much shorter generation times than other marine planktonic herbivores. Their many unique adaptations enable them to reach high population densities and react with maxiumum flexibility to the unpredictable and patchy environment of the pelagic ecosystem.
