Importance of Serological Tests in the Diagnosis of Citrobacter diversus and Citrobacter amalonaticus

In a set of 228 H 2S-negative indole-positive Citrobacter strains, 101 strains were biochemically classified as Citrobacter diversus, 113 strains as Citrobacter amalonaticus and 14 strains as Citrobacter amalonaticus biogroup 1. The basic biochemical tests were extended by inclusion of tests with Na...

description In a set of 228 H 2S-negative indole-positive Citrobacter strains, 101 strains were biochemically classified as Citrobacter diversus, 113 strains as Citrobacter amalonaticus and 14 strains as Citrobacter amalonaticus biogroup 1. The basic biochemical tests were extended by inclusion of tests with Namalonate, raffinose, melibiose, D-arabitol, KCN, and adonitol. Parallel use of serotyping with the aid of specific O-antisera gave a finer discrimination than either method alone. For the purpose of serotyping a new O-antigenic scheme was designed allowing to accommodate 9 serovars of C. diversus, 20 serovars of C. amalonaticus and 4 serovars of C. amalonaticus biogroup 1. In total, 87.7% of all citrobacters tested could be serotyped in this scheme of classification.
