Hypoechinorhynchus thermaceri n. sp. (Acanthocephala: Hypoechinorhynchidae) from the deep-sea zoarcid fish Thermaceres andersoni Rosenblatt and Cohen, 1986

Hypoechinorhynchus thermaceri n. sp. is described, based on 2 male and 5 nongravid female specimens collected from Thermaceres andersoni (Zoarcidae). This is the second record of an acanthocephalan parasite of an abyssal fish. The new species differs from H. alaeopis and H. magellanicus in the number of longitudinal rows of proboscis hooks, the total number of proboscis hooks, and the size of the various types of hooks. Hypoechinorhynchus alaeopis has been found in the subantarctic region and in the western Pacific, H. magellanicus in the subantarctic, and H. thermaceri is reported from the eastern Pacific.
