description In May, 2009 the city of Nanterre and the urban planning establishment Seine Arche launched an experimental project of participation and labeled it "cooperative." It is aimed at increasing home ownership. This complex operation raises a fundamental question : how can a project aimed at increasing access to private property ownership evoke a group dynamic ? Researchers and politicians are often afraid that operations whose goal is the acquisition of property necessarily locks people into living totally as individualists. The research, however, reveals the emergence of two dynamics : the creation of new of feelings within the inhabitants of self-awareness (Castel, 2001) and the progressive creation of a collective identity. The group dynamic is the extension and guarantee of the individual's plan to acquire private property. It is related to the process of participation which plays a formative role in the construction of both self-consciousness and of group-consciousness. Reproduced by permission of Bibliothèque de Sciences Po
