description A new species of the genus Hypomasticus is described from tributaries of the left margin of the lower Rio Amazonas, Brazil. The new species is diagnosed from other anostomids by having a dark midlateral stripe from the head to the caudal-fin base and two rows of longitudinally aligned dark blotches on the body, subinferior mouth, three teeth on the premaxilla and four on the dentary, 34 or 35 scales in the lateral line, and 16 scale rows around the caudal peduncle. The new species is hypothesized to be closely related to Hypomasticus despaxi, a species widely distributed in the coastal rivers of French Guiana. The adjacent distribution of the new species relative to Hypomasticus despaxi may be associated with occasional events of river captures in the Serra do Tumucumaque.
