Ecological Replacements of Ozone-Depleting Substances
Increasing levels of halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbons detected in environmental samples around the globe have been traced to their popularity as refrigerants, foam blowing agents, and solvents. description | Increasing levels of halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbons detected in environmental samples around the globe have been traced to their popularity as refrigerants, foam blowing agents, and solvents. These substances are known to act as ozone-depleting substances. Concern over the impacts of ozone-depletion trends has prompted planners to develop effective strategies for the withdrawal of ozone-depleting substances from widespread application. Despite bans on the production and use of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), the CFCs left over from historical use are expected to linger in the atmosphere for many decades to come. Many CFCs have been replaced by hydrochlorofluorocarbons and hydrofluorocarbons. The environmental impacts associated with these replacement compounds are discussed. |
