Oxidation of aqueous sulfite ion by nitrogen dioxide

The products of the reaction of nitrogen dioxide with sulfite solutions are reported, and a reaction mechanism is presented. Results suggest that the reaction could contribute significantly to sulfur(IV) oxidation in atmospheric aerosols under suitable conditions.
