The hybrid nature of the presumptive diploid, triploid and tetraploid strains was confirmed by analyzing: I) the nuclear condition; II) the cell size and the cell volume of the parental and fusant strain; III) the cellular DNA content; and IV) the induced and spontanenous mitotic segregation of properties in these strains. The increased level of ploidy was found to have an effect on the rate of ethanol production from D-xylose.
