Biogeochemistry of benzanthracene in an enclosed marine ecosystem

Laboratory experiments were carried out to determine the fate of a polycylic aromatic hydrocarbon, benzanthracene, (labelled with carbon-14) in a large-scale marine microcosm typical of the shallow coastal waters of the northeastern U.S.A. After 230 days, 29 per cent of the radioactivity had been re...

Zusammenfassung:Laboratory experiments were carried out to determine the fate of a polycylic aromatic hydrocarbon, benzanthracene, (labelled with carbon-14) in a large-scale marine microcosm typical of the shallow coastal waters of the northeastern U.S.A. After 230 days, 29 per cent of the radioactivity had been respired as carbon dioxide, and the remaining extractable radioactivity was evenly divided between the original compound and intermediate metabolic products.
