description | Geomorphological and geoarchaeological studies of valley bottoms can help to identify the factors controlling the evolution of physical environments and their complex interactions with societies. Several conceptual "models" highlight broadly synchronous palaeohydrological changes during the Last Post-Glacial period. During recent millennia, it is possible to characterise, with variable precision, flood hazards in terms of frequency and magnitude (submersion, erosion) and therefore evaluate the fluvial risk facing societies. In light of this, it is fundamental for fluvial palaeoenvironmental studies to consider three components : palaeohydrography, palaeohydrology and palaeohydraulics. This combined approach is applied to both rural and urban areas on the deltaic plains of the Rhone (southern France) and Isonzo (northern Italy) rivers. |
