CRÍTICA MUSICAL Y RADICALIZACIÓN POLÍTICA DURANTE LA II REPÚBLICA: EL CASO DE ABC

El objetivo del presente estudio es exponer algunas de las conclusiones obtenidas tras el análisis de la crítica musical en el periódic ABC desde 1923 hasta 1936. Tras una exposición de las características del medio y un pequeño perfil biógrafico de su principal crítico musical, Ángel María Castell, analizaremos las causas de la hostilidad creciente que muestra el medio hacia la música de vanguardia. En este aspecto, mostraremos cómo esta aversión no respondió a una hostilidad estética definida, puesto que el medio acogió con franco entusiasmo gran parte del nuevo canon, sino a una suma de argumentos históricos, estéticos, profesionales, personales y de status que cristalizaron en el enrarecido ambiente político y musical de la II República española (1931-1936). The objective of this study is to discuss some of the conclusions reached after analysing music criticism published in the periodical ABC from 1923 to 1926. Following a brief explanation of the newspaper's characteristics and a short biographical profile of its chief critic, Ángel María Castell, the causes behind the paper's increasing hostility towards avant-garde music will be analysed. In this respect, it will be shown how this aversion was not a result of a defined aesthetic hostility, as its reception of most of the new canon was frankly enthusiastic, but a whole host of historical, aesthetic, professional, personal and status-related arguments, that crystallized in the tense political climate of the Second Spanish Republic (1931-1936).
