description According to the reviewer, this is a standard, general psychology text. By way of comparison, in terms of conceptual difficulty, it ranks very far below Gray's (1991) or Gleitman's (1991) Psychology, and below Myers's (1992) Psychology. As best as can be determined, it is the only general psychology text with the title The World of Psychology (see record 1994-98093-000). The reviewer reports that the authors have resisted the urge to pepper the book with irrelevant or uncritical bows to this latest academic fad. Multicultural issues are introduced and discussed in their proper context. Bacharach was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the last chapter titled "The World of Psychology: Multicultural Issues and Applications." The book has several appealing features. The authors' writing style is attractive and, true to claims in the Preface, they have achieved a nice balance between discussions of psychological principles and the application of those principles. The reviewer also liked the way that they have handled "pop" psychology issues. They let the air out of many of these balloons, but they let the air out gently. The authors have also squarely faced a number of controversial issues without flinching from, or doing end runs around, the data. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2017 APA, all rights reserved)
