description Reviews the book, Child Abuse and Neglect: The Family and the Community edited by Ray E. Helfer and C. Henry Kempe (see record 1977-23538-000) and The Abused Child: A Multidisciplinary Approach to Developmental Issues and Treatment edited by Harold P. Martin (see record 1977-23544-000). It is suspected that one per cent of the child population each year is being physically abused and neglected. These two edited volumes provide comprehensive and complementary analyses of the medical, sociopsychological, developmental, and legal issues associated with the identification, treatment, and prevention of this major social problem. Despite the organizational problems of the Heifer and Kempe volume, both books provide an important basis for the evaluation of the problem of child abuse and neglect from the perspective of the child, of the family, and of the community. For this reason, then, they could serve as excellent companion reference texts for professionals and nonprofessionals working with abused children, and as companion volumes for undergraduate and graduate students in clinical psychology, special education, and social work.
