Determinants of quality of life and emotional well‐being in a bariatric surgery seeking cohort of 1501 multi‐ethnic Asian patients
Summary Objective The relationship between ethnicity, obesity and health‐related quality of life outcomes in a multi‐ethnic population remains poorly understood. We aim to investigate the relationship between ethnicity, body mass index (BMI), obesity‐associated diseases, as well as determinants of q...

Objective
The relationship between ethnicity, obesity and health‐related quality of life outcomes in a multi‐ethnic population remains poorly understood. We aim to investigate the relationship between ethnicity, body mass index (BMI), obesity‐associated diseases, as well as determinants of quality of life (QoL) in Southeast Asian patients with obesity. We aim to develop and validate a simple objective score to identify patients with obesity at high risk for major depression.
Methods
Associations between ethnicity, obesity‐associated diseases, BMI and determinants of QoL (Patient Health Questionnaire‐9 and 36‐Item Short Form Survey) were analysed using multivariate logistic regression in a prospective cohort of 1501 patients with obesity. Multivariate regression and receiver operating characteristics curves were used to develop and validate a novel scoring system to identify patients at risk of major depression.
Results
Patients of Chinese, Malay and Indian ethnicity had increased risk of hypertension (odds ratio [OR]: 1.51 [95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.19–1.92, p |

Results
Patients of Chinese, Malay and Indian ethnicity had increased risk of hypertension (odds ratio [OR]: 1.51 [95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.19–1.92, p < .001]), BMI Class 4 (OR: 17.89 [95% CI: 9.53–33.60, p < .001]) and major depression (OR: 1.71 [95% CI: 1.23–2.39, p = .002]), respectively. Factors associated with major depression (gender, ethnicity, age, obstructive sleep apnoea, Physical Component Score and Mental Component Score scores) were used to create and validate a novel scoring system with an area under curve of 0.812 (95% CI: 0.787–0.837). A cutoff of 4 of 7 points was identified with a sensitivity of 70%, specificity of 81%, positive predictive of 53% and negative predictive value of 90%.
Conclusion
The prevalence of metabolic complications from obesity significantly varies with ethnicity. We developed a novel and simple scoring tool combining objective demographic and patient‐reported outcomes to screen and triage patients at risk of major depression.</description><identifier>ISSN: 1758-8103</identifier><identifier>EISSN: 1758-8111</identifier><identifier>DOI: 10.1111/cob.12707</identifier><identifier>PMID: 39477685</identifier><language>eng</language><publisher>Chichester, UK: Blackwell Publishing Ltd</publisher><subject>Adult ; Asian People - psychology ; Bariatric Surgery - psychology ; Body Mass Index ; depression ; Depressive Disorder, Major - ethnology ; Depressive Disorder, Major - psychology ; ethnic differences ; Ethnicity ; Female ; Gastrointestinal surgery ; Humans ; Male ; Mental depression ; Middle Aged ; Obesity ; Obesity - ethnology ; Obesity - psychology ; Obesity - surgery ; Patients ; Prospective Studies ; Quality of Life ; Surveys and Questionnaires ; Well being</subject><ispartof>Clinical obesity, 2025-02, Vol.15 (1), p.e12707-n/a</ispartof><rights>2024 World Obesity Federation.</rights><rights>2025 World Obesity Federation</rights><lds50>peer_reviewed</lds50><oa>free_for_read</oa><woscitedreferencessubscribed>false</woscitedreferencessubscribed><cites>FETCH-LOGICAL-c2787-88e8b96cc43f71a38e7e7a2aaf20eadc56ab256386e00883c4a4132e866368583</cites></display><links><openurl>$$Topenurl_article</openurl><openurlfulltext>$$Topenurlfull_article</openurlfulltext><thumbnail>$$Tsyndetics_thumb_exl</thumbnail><linktopdf>$$Uhttps://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.1111%2Fcob.12707$$EPDF$$P50$$Gwiley$$H</linktopdf><linktohtml>$$Uhttps://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111%2Fcob.12707$$EHTML$$P50$$Gwiley$$H</linktohtml><link.rule.ids>314,778,782,1414,27911,27912,45561,45562</link.rule.ids><backlink>$$Uhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/39477685$$D View this record in MEDLINE/PubMed$$Hfree_for_read</backlink></links><search><creatorcontrib>Chua, Wei Yu</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Chia, Daryl Kai Ann</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Chan, Yiong Huak</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Leong, Eugene Kwong Fei</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Chen, Ashley</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Asif, Sharen</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Wong, Yu An</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Fung, Javis</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Johnson, Rachel Patricia</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Poojari, Shefali Jay</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Gani, Qamaruzaman Syed</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Lin, Wen</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Wai, Shu Ning</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Kayambu, Geetha</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Lim, Serene Peiying</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Neo, Wen Joo</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Wee, Candice Xin Yi</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Lomanto, Davide</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Kim, Guowei</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>So, Jimmy Bok Yan</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Shabbir, Asim</creatorcontrib><title>Determinants of quality of life and emotional well‐being in a bariatric surgery seeking cohort of 1501 multi‐ethnic Asian patients</title><title>Clinical obesity</title><addtitle>Clin Obes</addtitle><description>Summary
