Living in the supernatural, naturally: Pentecostal rituals and spiritual impulses in Sweden

‪Many Pentecostals in Sweden like to say that one should "live in the supernatural, naturally". Their regular and repeated interaction with the divine and what they themselves call the "supernatural" suggests that this metaphor is indicative of a particular sensibility. This article examines the bodily experiences to which the metaphor refers, and the believer's sensorial perceptions of the supernatural entities with which they interact – Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and demons. While the concept of "sensibility" is useful for thinking about the anchoring of their shared metaphysics in sensory-motor experiences, it also enables us to scrutinize their historical variations. Swedish Pentecostalism has undergone significant liturgical transformations, characterized by a multiplicity of internal perspectives on the reality of the supernatural. This paper also pays attention to the variations in sensitivity to the supernatural that can be observed from one individual to another. Although they share a common sense of reality that postulates the existence of a "duplicate world" populated by invisible beings, not all believers seem equally receptive to it.‪
