description The growing needs has been pushing the limits, to which the mining industry has to lift itself to fulfil the demand. Hence it requires advanced technology and proper geological studies to carry out any mining operation. In mining operations, we deal mainly with hard rocks with different mechanical properties and varying strengths. Research in geology and rock mechanics is done to elucidate the influence of the rock index properties in determining the strength, durability, crushability and nature of the rock. The performance of rock, under a particular condition, depends upon physical and mechanical properties of rock materials. The physical properties may be known as index properties, which describe the rock material and help in classifying them. The mechanical properties may be known as strength properties and they give information about the performance of rock materials, when subjected to a particular loading system. The determination of strength properties is, invariably, a tedious process. The preparation of samples and their curing requires precision and is time consuming. Therefore, relatively simpler alternative testing methods have been developed. Some of the methods which have given more consistent results and have been applied more commonly are – Point load strength index, Protodyakonov strength index, Impact strength index, Rebound hardness. Indices of strength properties are mandatory indicators characterizing the mechanical behavior of rocks in the process of conducting civil and industrial geo-engineering work. To assess the strength properties of rocks, both in-situ and laboratory test methods can be used, which have their merits and demerits. The first are considered reliable and time consuming, the second - less time consuming and less reliable. Point load testing is used to determine rock strength indexes in geotechnical practice. In rock mechanics and engineering geology, the point load test is regarded as a valuable field test to give an estimate of the unconfined compressive strength. The point load test apparatus and procedure enables economical testing of core or lump rock samples in either a field or laboratory setting. The definition of the correlation dependences between the indices of strength properties was carried out by researchers all over the world, in particular, by outstanding Russian mining scientist M.
