Objective: to carry out an analysis of the mental health of smokers through the application of a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Beck Scale for anxious symptoms, the Reasons to Quit Smoking Scale (MRSS) and the Patient Health Question-9 Scale (PHQ-9) in patients belonging to a primary health care smoking cessation group.   Methods: field research with quantitative methodology and descriptive data analysis through tabulation of numerical results obtained with in-person application of validated scales and a specific sociodemographic questionnaire.   Results and Discussion: Of the participants, 44.4% had moderate anxiety and 11.1% severe anxiety, according to the Beck scale for anxiety symptoms. Regarding the application of the PHQ-9 scale, 55.6% presented moderate depression and 11.1% severe. Even so, the main motivators were dependence and reduction of tension, both with 88.9%, followed by the pleasure of smoking with 66.7%.   Conclusion and Implication: Current research therefore suggests that the relationship between smoking and mental health disorders is not possible to establish a cause and effect relationship. The use of screening scales is recommended when approaching smoker patients.
