Gender-Specific Manifestations of Daily Physical Activity and Sedentary Behavior in Elderly Residents of Surgut

The objective of the study was to establish gender-specific characteristics of physical activity (PA) and sedentary behavior in elderly inhabitants of North Yugra. Two hundred and ninety-five residents of Surgut (102 men aged 62.9 ± 5.3 years, 35%; 193 women aged 61.9 ± 3.8 years, 65%) completed a I...

description The objective of the study was to establish gender-specific characteristics of physical activity (PA) and sedentary behavior in elderly inhabitants of North Yugra. Two hundred and ninety-five residents of Surgut (102 men aged 62.9 ± 5.3 years, 35%; 193 women aged 61.9 ± 3.8 years, 65%) completed a IPAQ-RU questionnaire. The study revealed gender-specific differences in body length and mass, as well as in the bodymass and body-fat indices. It was found that more energy was spent on physical activity in work in the home or summer home (moderate-intensity physical activity for women and high-intensity for men). The data of the study showed no statistically significant gender-specific differences in general physical activity. Sedentary behavior is more common among men than women (2543 vs. 2441 min/week). An amount of 47% of lowactivity men and 56% of women reported that they spent 6–9 h/day sitting, while 42% reported 9–12 h/day. Special measures should be taken to increase physical activity, which is too low at the moment, and to decrease sedentary behavior, which is currently at a high level.
