description | Introduction: The phenomenon of Turnover is a current problem that needs to be analyzed in order to promote awareness and find strategies to promote retention. The present scoping review aims to map the scientific evidence regarding the main causes and consequences of the phenomenon of turnover in nurses working in health institutions. Systematic Review Method: Using the methodology of The Joanna Briggs Institute for scoping reviews (2015), research was carried out in the MEDLINE and CINAHL and then in three other databases. Articles written in English and Portuguese, from the European and North American context, between 2008 and 2018, were selected. Presentation of results: A total of 136 articles were identified and 38 considered eligible for analysis. Interpretation of Results: The potential causes of turnover are of three distinct orders: personal, relational and organizational. Regarding the consequences, some were identified directly affecting nurses and others patients. Even so, the main focus is still on the economic and financial costs felt by organizations. Conclusion: More studies are needed to address the role of nurse managers in preventing this phenomenon, as well as in promoting positive work environments. |
