description Dendrimers are hyper-branched organic compounds characterized via a three-dimensional structure possessing functional groups on the surface. These terminals groups can be simply modified to enhance the functionality of dendrimers and produce biocompatible and versatile products. They are a promising agent for nanomedicine applications because of their unique properties, including nanoscale size, globular shape, and high reactivity, solubility in water, internal cavities, and comfortable synthesis methods. The use of dendrimers as drug delivery systems have received great attention from researchers. Dendrimers can be applied as carriers for different therapeutic agents. They can reduce the toxicity of drugs and increase their efficacy. This review provides a general outline of the structure and types of dendrimers, the synthesis of dendrimers, and applications in the nanomedicine field with emphasis on drug delivery.
