The article analyzes the conceptions of pedagogues and intellectuals in Cuba about the system of school awards and punishments between the end of the eighteenth century and the first decades of the following century. In this transitional context, the complexities in the ways of thinking, controls and corrections in public and private schools are exposed. Although the spaces for debate were diverse, the article focuses on the Economic Society of Friends of the Country and its Patriotic Deputations, an institution that integrated the most representative exponents of pedagogy interested in the subject of corporal punishment, from José Agustín Caballero, author of the first ordinances that provided disciplinary rules for the primary schools, up to José de la Luz y Caballero, architect of the preventive “code of legislation.” |
