description The problem of identification and authentication is relevant. In conditions of crisis manifestations, including in connection with the pandemic, the number of fraudulent actions on the network is increasing, aimed at taking over information -personal data, bank card data, other important information. This raises the question of identification and authentication. At present, in Russia and in the world, some approaches to methods, protocols, and standards of authentication have been developed. Hardware, biometric and passwordless authentication are some of the most promising areas. However, no holistic approaches have been developed to the essence and main directions of development of authentication aimed at reducing vulnerability, which does not contribute to overall security on the Internet. In general, this issue assumes an interdisciplinary approach that takes into account both technical, social, political, economic factors, and, of course, an effective legal mechanism. In search of a solution to the problem, approaches to hardware, biometric and passwordless authentication in Russia and abroad are being investigated.
