description | Considering that Latinxs constitute the largest minority group in the United States and that the Spanish language has been noted to be an important consideration when administering psychological tests, an evaluation of this measure with Spanish-speaking Latinxs was warranted. Data was collected from a primary care clinic in a predominately Latinx neighborhood. Participants consisted of 50 Latinx and 30 non-Latinx White (NLW) primary care patients. Participants completed a basic demographic questionnaire that included questions about the participants' age, ethnicity, sex, relationship status, income, immigration status, and education level and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF). While results indicated ethnic differences on several of the MMPI-2-RF scales, it is noteworthy that none of the mean scores on any of the scales were above 65. Thus, while findings were statistically significant, they may not be clinically meaningful. However, meaningful results were identified for the validity scales. A substantially higher proportion of Latinxs produced an invalid MMPI-2-RF profile than did NLWs, which indicates both statistical and clinical significance. The data from the current study indicates that there is a higher probability of yielding an invalid profile among Latinxs as compared to NLW profiles.
Public Significance Statement
The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 Restructured is a commonly used assessment tool in clinical psychology. Results from this study indicate that ethnic groups (such as Latinx) may perform differently on this measure. |
