Zusammenfassung: | This paper presents a numerical method for estimating and comparing the visual magnitude of waterfalls taking into account four characteristics. Magnitude values are computed primarily using the height of the falls and secondarily from the average width along its descent. Adjustments in magnitude are made based upon the water discharge at the falls and the degree of verticality of its escarpment. Magnitude values are placed on a logarithmic scale so that each increment of ten in the scale represents a doubling of waterfall magnitude. Other factors equal, the doubling characteristic also applies for comparisons of falls height. This scale is useful for making general interest comparisons of waterfalls and can be utilized toward assessing their scenic quality and desirability for preservation. It is not intended for hydrologic engineering applications. |
