description This study examines the administration of seven institutional repositories belonging to Cuban institutions of higher education. A description of the administrative practices of the sample is provided. The RECOLECTA guide has been used as a basis for evaluation of the repositories. The results show that institutional repositories promote the movement for open access to scientific output from Cuban universities. The development of the legal and political aspects of the institutional repositories studied is deficient. In addition, it became evident that the repositories in the sample must increase their capacity for interoperability, exploration, access, and information exchange.
