description With the worldwide increase in the incorporation of environmental issues in business practice, some research has emerged that evaluates the need of incorporation of environmental issues in business practice to gain competitive advantage. However, there is little information about how much environmental issues are being incorporated in business practice by Indian companies. What is the position of industrial units in India regarding environmental management, what are the different environmental performance indicators, how far the units are proactive in management of environmental issues, and how is the environmental performance of the business units measured are things yet to be demonstrated. Studying the status of environmental proactiveness would enhance understanding of the conceptual issues to a much greater degree. These issues are analyzed by collecting some primary data from some sample grossly polluting units of West Bengal. The results show that facilities that are motivated to incorporate the environmental issues in business practice of the units observe greater overall environmental proactiveness.
