Zusammenfassung: | In this volume, Donald E. Chipman, prizewinning author of books on the history of early Mexico and Spanish Texas, returns to a topic that first interested him 30 years ago: the lives of the descendants of the surviving heirs of Moctezuma II, ill-fated ruler of the Aztec empire at the time of the Spanish conquest. The encomienda was guaranteed to her and her descendants in perpetuity, which was a highly significant concession at the time, although one that predictably occasioned disputes over rights to succession on the part of her last husband and sons. Even of Dona Isabel, surely the best-known of Moctezuma's heirs, we know disappointingly little. [...]at the core of this volume remains the mystery of what life was like for Tecuichpotzin. |
