description | Frailty and sarcopenia are frequent geriatric conditions and associated with increased healthcare service use and adverse health outcomes. It is now recognized that the clinical picture of physical frailty overlaps substantially with that of sarcopenia. Thus, it makes sense to screen for both frailty and sarcopenia in older individuals. Over the years, different operational definitions have been elaborated to identify frailty and sarcopenia, but none of them has received unanimous consensus. This, in turn, has hampered the clinical implementation of frailty and sarcopenia as well as the design of targeted clinical and pharmacological interventions. The aim of this paper is to highlight the relevance of an early and rapid screening for frailty and sarcopenia that can be easily be cared in daily clinical practice. Both FRAIL and SARC-F appear to be useful for screening by primary health care professionals. Our review provides to the healthcare professionals and policymakers an overview of strategies that can be implemented in daily practice in order to detect frailty and sarcopenia. |
