description | AIM: The AIM of this study is to review about thromboelastography. OBJECTIVES: This review focuses on the clinical use, techniques, applications of thromboelastography. BACKGROUND: Thromboelastography (TEG) is a coagulation assay used to test the efficiency of blood coagulation. It is performed in whole blood. It is a tool for the measurement of adhesiveness, elasticity, viscosity, fibrinogen levels, platelet function, clot dissociation by fibrinolysis. It provides easy means of monitoring blood coagulation. It is used in assessing haemostasis during liver transplantation, cardiac surgery, severe trauma. Samples are taken from unmodified blood and they are generally extracted from central catheters or arterial lines. Standard, Rapid, Heparinase, Functional fibrinogen, Platelet mapping are the different types of assays that can be run using thromboelastography. |
