When Katrina struck, Ochsner had evacuated all facilities and retreated to its main campus according to plan to wait out the storm. When the storm broke, the main campus housed 2,400 patients, employees, and family members, as well as over 100 pets. Internal communication is essential during a crisis. Frequent town hall meetings, a daily newsletter, orientation for all rotating personnel, and an 800 number for call-in messages to all displaced employees were keys to unity and hope. Among the lessons Oschner learned include: 1. Expect to be alone. 2. Practice gratitude. 3. Cultivate curiosity. 4. Practice patience. 5. Get on site and stay there. 6. Stop rotating assignments. 7. Use the private sector. |
