Combining the two neonatal examinations

Jul 1, 1999 EDITOR-Glazener et al described a study of two or one neonatal examinations done by medical staff. 1 In our hospital all newborn babies are examined by the midwife soon after birth for gross anomalies, which include cleft palate, spinal deformities, skull and facial deformities, limb abnormalities such as syndactyly, and number of vessels in the umbilical cord. Koh reminds us that all newborn babies are examined immediately after birth by the delivery suite midwife. [...]in our study, babies allocated to the "one screen" policy on day 3 after birth were actually examined twice, and those allocated to the "two screen" policy were actually examined three times.
